I used to be a conservative. The idea of everyone having an equal chance to succeed is very appealing especially to someone who runs the gambit of “firsts” (first high school, college, masters and soon to be PhD grad). We always hear that everyone is created equal and this is the delusion that Dr Stuckel operates under. Everyone is not equal. People are born with advantages and disadvantages. Some can be overcame, others cannot. This arrogant person has been to far too many Ayn Rand meeting and is aware of very little that is happening in the real word. If you think that the article/letter was bad, take a few minutes and read the comment she made to readers. As I said, I used to be conservative and I still think that if you can contribute that you should. The adjunct in the article overcame serious mental health issue to lead a very productive life and probably touched many students. Instead of being celebrated for her successes, this troll in professors clothing decided to minimize and belittle her. It’s shameful.

RIght? Also, I know a lot of conservatives. I have a lot of conservative family members and even a few friends, and definitely more than a few students. None of them, however they feel about the free market, would ever say something so horribly demeaning about a dead little old lady.

I found the way the author stuck to her guns in the comment section even more baffling than the letter itself. Seriously, it’s the twenty-teens. Even if you are yourself a troll, don’t feed the trolls.

With all the problems and scandals plaguing universities today, it says quite a lot about this woman (especially with the “put your big-girl panties on” line) that this is what she chooses to become angry about. Yes, truly despicable that she attacks a dead octogenarian. But also despicable that the woman is also an uncritical misogynist, proving once again, that misogyny is not the sole domain of men. (“big-girl panties”, really?)
Moreover, I’d much rather have a ‘whiny adjunct’ teaching my children and other people’s, than a racist or sexual predator. And looking at the sixty-plus schools under investigation form Title IX violations, it’s not as if this isn’t a real issue and one worth getting exercised over. So yes, interesting where this women chooses to focus her ire. Her fatuous and tiresome screed is little more than ‘punching down’ and rank humble bragging (i.e. ‘I’ve had jobs with benefits for thirty years!!!’ As if we are living in the same economy as when she first entered the job market.)

Thank you, Rebecca, for publicizing this letter, and I think it is extremely important that adjuncts read these letters and ask themselves if they want to be Margaret Mary Vojtko — or, worse yet, do they want to be part of an institution of supposed higher education that employs Catherine Stukel? Teaching at any level, like nursing, acting, or editing for a publishing house, is, yes, a calling, but it is also a job. After a few years, adjuncting that goes nowhere is a dead end job. Adjuncts have to realize that they are not prisoners or slaves. They can move on — and look for a job where they can use their talents without dealing with the Stukels of the world. I left. Yes, I missed teaching and still do, but frankly I never had to put up with someone as smug as Catherine Stukel outside of a university.

They can also push back against the Stuckels of the world hard, and get the rights they deserve. I have no desire to adjunct full-time again, but I do believe that our students deserve professors who are paid a fair and decent wage, and that since the administrations aren’t going to give that to us, that it’s our job to demand and take it. I don’t want to be an adjunct anymore, but that doesn’t mean I think the adjuncts who want to do it should leave. They should strike, though :).

The thing is, Stuckel is parly right, though not for the reasons she thinks. Under present conditions, adjuncts ARE bad role models for students. When, despite the advanced education that qualifies us to teach the class, we can’t get job security or a decent wage, we become living, breathing symbols of how little value is placed on the knowledge we’re trying to share. That’s bad for us, bad for our students, bad our disciplines, bad for the universities, and bad for the overall status of education in our society.
But what’s funny is that she somehow thinks the problem is with the adjuncts themselves, rather than with a labor system that guarantees those classes will only be taught by those of us who can’t manage to secure real employment.
